How To Help Children With Hearing Loss Enjoy Halloween

Helping your kids get ready for Halloween is a big task. You help them choose their costume, buy crafting supplies, do their ghostly makeup and more. If one or more of your children has hearing loss, you may also be concerned about how to ensure they have a great Halloween.

Let’s examine a few ways you can accommodate your kid’s hearing loss to help them have an even better spooky season.

1. Choose Their Costume Carefully

If your child wears hearing aids, consider their devices when helping them choose a costume. Options with helmets or masks featuring an elastic band that goes around their head may disrupt their devices. Any costumes that produce a lot of noise may also interfere with their devices’ microphones or increase the likelihood that your child will feel overstimulated.

In addition to finding a hearing aid-friendly costume, you can make your child’s devices extra secure by attaching them to their shirt with a hearing aid clip.

2. Trick-Or-Treat Together

Younger children with hearing loss may not feel confident going door to door, especially if they don’t communicate verbally. Try going to the door with your child. Your presence can bolster their confidence and help them have a good time.

If they would prefer a more low-key option, try going to one of Savannah’s trunk-or-treat events or head to the Trick or Treat on River Street event on October 25th.

3. Host a Chill Party

Traditional Halloween events, such as noisy parties or haunted houses, may be challenging for kids with hearing loss. All the extra background noise and competing voices can make it difficult for them to communicate with others.

Try hosting your own Halloween-themed party. You can invite your children’s friends and plan fun but low-key events like pumpkin carving, cookie decorating or watching scary movies. Aim to keep the volume low to create an inclusive environment.

4. Charge and Clean Your Child’s Hearing Aids

Give your child’s hearing aids a thorough cleaning to remove wax and other debris and make sure their devices have fresh batteries or are fully charged before Halloween.
